After 30 Years, Church Grows From 6 Couples to Congregation of 5,000
Holiday-season services have special meaning for all religious groups in Kane County, but for one, it’s also a season that celebrates the anniversary of of startup congregation that has grown from six families to a congregation of more than 5,000.
Christ Community Church in St. Charles is celebrating its 30th anniversary, according to a press release it issued last week.
On Dec. 16, 1984, 140 people attended the first Christ Community Church service in rented movie-theater space in a St. Charles mall. Now, Christ Community has a weekly attendance of 5,000 at campuses in St. Charles, DeKalb, Aurora and Bartlett.
On the weekend of Jan. 10 and 11, all four campuses will celebrate the milestone during weekend services. All are welcome.
“This party weekend will include music, special video greetings, surprises, and the first of four ‘I Love My Church’ weekend messages on what it means to belong, grow, serve, and reach,” the press release says.

The Christ Community story began with six couples in the St. Charles area meeting regularly for Bible study. They wanted to launch a church that would appeal to their friends and neighbors. They hired a young pastor named Jim Nicodem who was leading a church out on Cape Cod.
In 1987, Christ Community Church purchased 40 acres of land at the corner of Bolcum and Randall in St. Charles. The doors opened in February 1991. The Campus in DeKalb was added in 2004, Aurora’s Blackberry Creek Campus became part of Christ Community in 2007, and 2011 saw the launch of the Bartlett Campus.
