It’s This Weekend! Recycling Your Electronics, Christmas Lights, Books, Document Shredding

Yes, it’s the holiday season, and there’s a lot to do before Dec. 25, but there’s also a recycling event this weekend that you probably aren’t going to want to miss — because this only happens once a quarter and because you might want to be recycling some of that holiday stuff.

Kane County Recycles will hold an electronics, books and document-shredding event from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at 540 S. Randall in St. Charles.

Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland asks that recyclers “do not arrive early as it creates a traffic jam before we even open.”

What can you recycle on Saturday?

(1) ELECTRONICS such as Christmas lights, computers, keyboards, laptops, printers, televisions (any size or age), stereos, cell phones, microwaves, and more.

“We unload for you!” Jarland said.

A complete list of accepted items, and more information can be found at www.countyofkane.org /recycling under “Electronics Recycling.”

(2) BOOKS of any age and condition for reuse or recycling.

(3) DOCUMENTS are shredded onsite.

“You can watch them being tipped into the shredding trucks,” Jarland said.

The limit is four boxes or paper bags of documents. You should remove any plastic or metal bindings and binder clips, but it’s OK to leave in envelope windows, staples and paper clips, Jarland said.

The recycling event is for Kane County residents only; no documents from businesses should be brought to the event. More guidelines can be found at www.countyofkane.org /recycling under “Document Shredding.”

Kane County has the capacity to receive 25,000 pounds of documents at the event, but recycling must cease once the trucks are full, and documents are taken on a first come, first served basis.

Kane County does not accept hazardous waste or large household appliances, such as washers and refrigerators.
