Geneva Mourns Loss of John Gaines; Police Investigate Death at Golf Club

Geneva is mourning the loss of John Gaines, 74, an active member of the community whose body was found Friday at the Geneva Golf Club.

According to a report from the Geneva Police Department, Gaines was found laying face down in the creek at the Geneva Golf Club, 831 South St. Geneva Fire Department personnel investigated and then contacted Delnor Hospital, and Gaines was pronounced deceased at 1:50 p.m.

The Geneva Police Department is investigating the circumstances of the Gaines’ activities prior to his death.

“Though there is currently nothing to indicate foul play and/or criminal activity, the Geneva Police Department will continue to investigate the circumstances of this case until a cause of death has been determined by the Kane County Coroner’s Office,” the release said.

During the course of this investigation, it was determined that the victim’s name is;

Gaines is longtime resident of Geneva and husband of Geneva Chamber of Commerce President Jean Gaines.

“At this time, the thoughts and prayers of city of Geneva personnel/employees go out to the Gaines family,” the release said.

Visitation will be held from 3  p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, with a memorial service immediately following at Malone Funeral Home, 324 East State Street (Route 38), Geneva, Father David Peck, officiating. Burial will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Geneva Community Chest PO Box 441, Geneva 60134.
