Hazardous Weather Outlook: Christmas Eve Travel Dicey, But Not As Bad As Predicted Tuesday
The National Weather Service for Kane County, IL, is warning residents that rain is likely to turn to heavy snow on Christmas Eve, making holiday travel hazardous.
The weather service dropped a Winter Storm Watch for Kane County and has a Hazardous Weather Statement in its place.
Rain is expected to develop this morning (Wednesday) and will mix with and then change to wet snow this afternoon. A period of heavy, wet snow is possible, but more likely over Northwest Indiana and in Illinois east of Interstate 55. Several inches are possible in those areas.
Snowfall amounts are expected to decrease quickly across Northern Illinois.
On Tuesday afternoon, the NWS reported that the region will be impacted by a winter storm “that could make travel difficult to nearly impossible, at times” and suggested that “those planning travel on Wednesday and Wednesday night are urged to monitor later forecasts and potentially plan to alter travel plans, as needed.”
