Struggling With Foreclosure? Get Mortgage Relief Saturday In Carpentersville

If you’re struggling to hold onto your home, remember this date: Dec. 6, 2014.

That’s when the Kane County Foreclosure Task Force will host a Mortgage Relief Project event that could help you lower your mortgage, avoid foreclosure and keep your home.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Dundee Crown High School, 1500 Kings Road, Carpentersville.

Kane County Board member Theresa Barreiro, chair of Kane County’s Foreclosure Task Force, is encouraging homeowners who are struggling to stay in their home to attend the event.

“Kane County is absolutely committed to helping as many homeowners as possible avoid foreclosure,” she said. “There are options, and folks should not give up hope. These events will bring the experts to our communities to help individuals and families sort through those options and provide solutions.”

At Wednesday’s Executive Committee meeting, Barreiro said the Kane County task force program has helped almost 300 families so far. “We just want to help the folks out there who are in dire straights,” she said.

Barreiro also took a minute to thank all the members of the task force for their hard work this year, but she gave special credit to fellow County Board member Cristina Castro, who also is a member of the Illinois Housing Development Authority board. IHDA finances the creation and preservation of affordable housing throughout the state of Illinois, and the authority’s help has been invaluable to the task force, Barreiro said.

“Everyone on the task force brings so much to the table,” Barreiro said, “and that’s what makes this effort so special.”

If you have any questions, Barreiro asks that you please call the toll-free consumer hotline (800) 532-8785 during regular business hours or visit www.idfpr.com or www.ihda.org.

Homeowners who attend will receive helpful advice about mortgage refinancing, foreclosure prevention, legal rights, credit counseling and avoiding scams. Additionally, HUD-certified counselors will be on hand to provide private, one-on-one counseling.

The Mortgage Relief Project is a statewide program co-sponsored by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, the Illinois Housing Development Authority and the Illinois Department of Employment Security. It is designed to offer a one-stop shop where homeowners can access the resources of state agencies and nonprofit organizations that help Illinois residents stay in their homes.

Illinois’ Homeowner Protection Act requires all lenders and loan servicers to notify homeowners who are at least 30 days late on their mortgage payments that they have 30 days to seek housing counseling to get their loans back on track. If a homeowner enters housing counseling, they get an additional 30-day grace period on foreclosure in order to work out a payment plan or refinance option.

Barreiro said the Dec. 6 program is the last of this year, and she encouraged anyone who knows someone who might need help to please spread the word about the event.

“Foreclosure doesn’t just affect your house; it affects your life,” she said.
