TOP STORIES OF 2014 — No. 3: Please Don’t Feed the Coyotes

  • Editor’s Note: This is the third in a series counting down the top five Kane County Connects stories of 2014.

On Sunday, as we were getting ready to go out the door for church, we saw a coyote in the detention area behind our home in Geneva, near Good Templar Park. We see coyotes a lot, of course, but generally not so blatantly during the light of day.

Two cars were stopped on East Side Drive, watching the animal. Coyote sightings was the topic of conversation after church, as well, when we gabbed with a neighbor friend and former Geneva alderman.

Really, any time anyone reports about coyotes in Kane County, people sit up and take notice, and that’s true of Kane County Connects’ “Top 10 Stories” countdown of 2014. The No. 3 most-read story of the past six months was Please Don’t Feed the Coyotes — And Other Useful Tips For Coyote Coexistence but also cracking the top 40 was Coyote Sightings Increase Between Now and February. Another article that probably would have made the top 10 if not for our migration from “Kane County Connected” to “Kane County Connects” was Coywolves on the Rise in Illinois; Have You Seen One in Kane County?

There are a lot of great places to find more information about coyotes, including Kane County Animal Control, which offers three good online PDF resources: Coexisting With Coyotes, Coyote Awareness and Coyote Facts.
