4 School Board Candidate Petitions Challenged; Electoral Board Meets Wednesday

4 School Board Candidate Petitions Challenged; Electoral Board Meets Wednesday

Kane County Clerk John A. Cunningham has called on the Kane County Electoral Board to meet Wednesday to hear objections to the nominating petitions for four candidates in the April 7 school board election.

The candidates are Jerry Elliott, Dan Nagel and Tony Valente of Kaneland School District 302 and Brian Sauvegeau of School District U-46.

The Electoral Board is made up of three officials — Cunningham, Kane County State’s Attorney Joseph McMahon and Kane County Circuit Clerk Thomas Hartwell — or their designees. Hearings will start at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, in the Kane County Clerk’s Office conference room, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Building B, and proceed in 15-minute intervals. The board hears testimony regarding each filed objection.

The filing against Sauvageau is based on alleged issues with petition signatures and statement of candidacy. The objection was filed by Mary Shesgreen and Cheryl Brumbaugh-Crayford. Sauvageau’s hearing will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The hearings are open to the public, according to provisions of the Open Meetings Act.

There are now nine candidates vying for four, four-year seats on the U-46 School Board. Two candidates — Cody Holt and Kai Rush — will face off in a race for the open two-year seat.

Holt, Rush and Phil A. Costello previously had filed for both the four-year and the two-year seats, but Holt and Rush withdrew from the four-year race and Costello withdrew from the two-year race.

There are eight candidates seeking four full-term open seats on the Kaneland School Board. The petitions of Jerry Elliott, Dan Nagel and Tony Valente have been challenged by Gale Pavlak,  Lynn D. McHenry, Peter Lopatin and Teresa Graue Witt. Lopatin and Witt are candidates in the April 7 election, and Pavlak is a present member of the School Board.

Up-to-date status reports on the candidates for School Board in Kane County, other than Aurora school districts which are under the auspices of the Aurora Election Commission, can be found on this page of the Kane County Clerk’s website.
