Elgin Community Mourns 12-Year-Old Pedestrian Hit By Vehicle Wednesday in Elgin
Family members and friends are mourning the loss of a 12-year-old boy who was killed Wednesday after he was hit by a car in Elgin.
The Kane County Coroner’s Office today identified the 12-year-old as Gerardo Simental of Elgin.
According to an Elgin Police Department press release, police and fire departments responded to the area of Route 20 and McLean Boulevard at about 6:14 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle in traffic.
The preliminary crash investigation revealed a vehicle traveling east on Route 20 struck Simental, who was running south across the lanes of traffic west of McLean Boulevard. The young man was pronounced dead at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured.
The Elgin Police Department Traffic Unit is continuing its investigation. Anyone with information pertinent to the crash is encouraged to call 847-289-2661.
Toxicology samples were sent to a forensic laboratory for analysis, according to a Coroner’s Office press release.
Gerardo, whose nickname was “Lalo,” was with his older brother at the time of the accident, a family friend told the Daily Herald. Gerardo was remembered as outgoing and happy.
