Great Summer Job, Internship Opportunities With Forest Preserve District
The Forest Preserve District of Kane County seeks applicants for 2015 summer seasonal and internships positions.
Available summer intern/seasonal positions include: natural resources technician intern/seasonal, naturalist intern/seasonal, horticulturist intern/seasonal, public relations intern, landscape architecture GIS intern, wildlife technician seasonal, campground attendant seasonal, maintenance-field operations seasonal, human resources/volunteer services assistant seasonal and trades seasonal.
Applicants for summer positions must be 18 or older, able to work outdoors in adverse weather, possess a valid driver’s license, and able to maintain an enthusiastic, courteous, positive attitude and team spirit. Applicants who apply for the campground attendant or horticulturist must be 21 years of age or older.
Natural resources technicians assist field staff with exotic species management, seed harvesting and ongoing restoration activities. Wildlife technicians will assist with small mammal census projects, turtle and deer surveys, bird monitoring, salamander and snake census projects and other research. Hours for both positions are typically 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Naturalist intern/seasonals will work with the District’s naturalist staff to plan and conduct various nature day camps. Interns will help lead hikes and other activities in the forest preserves and assist the naturalist staff with daily operation of the Nature Center. Hours are typically 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Horticulturists will help maintain gardens in the District, assist with budgets for upcoming seasons, and coordinate the public use of assigned areas. Hours will be determined by the schedule of the horticulturist, as needed and up to 540 hours. Landscape architecture GIS intern will develop site plans, grading plans and details using AutoCAD. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Campground attendants will provide information and answer questions to campers and the public regarding camping and the District preserves. They will collect fees and operate the check-in station. Hours may include Sunday through Saturday, morning and afternoon shifts.
Human resources/volunteer services assistant seasonals will complete the employee orientation video, prepare news releases, assist with volunteer banquet preparations, and respond to volunteer inquiries. Hours are typically Monday through Friday, 20 to 30 hours per week.
Public relations interns will work with Community Affairs staff to plan and staff special events and assist with marketing, writing, graphic design and other promotional work. Hours are typically 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Maintenance-field operations seasonals will help mow and maintain picnic areas, trails, parking lots and roadways; assist with maintenance and repair of buildings and structures; operate various hand and power landscape and construction equipment; and other custodial work. Hours may include shift work, early mornings, weekends and holidays.
Trades positions involve building and structural maintenance and repair work, carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, masonry and roofing. Hours are typically 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
