Kane Animal Control Cites Owner After Horse Dies in Maple Park
The owner of a horse that died in the extreme cold temperatures of the past few days has been cited by Kane County Animal Control with failure to provide sufficient quantity of wholesome food, water, adequate shelter and protection from the weather.
According to a press release from the Animal Control Division, a call for a deceased horse in the village of Maple Park came into Kane County Animal Control the morning of Jan. 7.
Kane County Animal Control personnel went to the property, where the deceased horse was found. There were 10 other horses on the property outside, the release said. With the exception that the horses were outdoors, the owner “appeared to be in compliance with the law,” said the press release, which was posted Thursday on the Kane County Animal Control Facebook page.
Kane County Animal Control personnel left a notification for the owner of the property to contact the department as Animal Control began an investigation, the release said. The owner complied with the notification and provided shelter for the remaining horses.
The owner was cited and the Illinois Department of Agriculture and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office were notified of the investigation.
Kane County Animal Control Administrator Brett Youngsteadt said the sad news of the horse’s death also serves as a reminder to pet owners about the dangers of extreme cold weather.
“Please be cautious with pets and domestic animals,” he said. “We recommend that pets are not left outside for extended periods of time and that all pets have access to adequate food, water and shelter.”
