What’s Closed, Open For MLK Day in Kane County
There are a lot of ways to celebrate Martin Luther King Day in Kane County, including the eight ways mentioned in this article.
As a reminder, most government offices, banks, post offices and schools are closed for the national holiday.
Typically, Metra trains run on regular, weekday schedules.
Proudly, Illinois was the first state to adopt MLK Day, in 1973. It wasn’t until 1993 that that all 50 states held MLK Day in one form or another — and even then it was “sometimes under a different name, and not always as a paid state holiday,” according to infoplease.com. And it took until 2000 for Utah and South Carolina to get fully on board.

Here are some reminders of what’s open and what’s not on MLK Day in Kane County:
Kane County
Most Kane County offices are closed. Obviously, that doesn’t include the Sheriff’s Office, which is 24-7, 365 days a year. And the Kane County Division of Transportation is going to be plowing streets, no matter what.
U.S. Post Offices
U.S. post offices are closed, as well.
Metra
Metra generally runs on its usual weekday schedule, but pick out your line on this Metra link to find out exact schedules for your trains.
City Halls, Townships
In general, non-emergency departments for most municipal governments are closed.
To check your town’s schedule, Kane County’s website provides a list of links to the local-government web pages in your neck of the woods and includes lists of cities, villages and townships.
Garbage Pickup Days
In general, garbage pickup days are not affected by this holiday, but check your local municipality’s public works site to be sure.
Public and Private Schools
Obviously, public and private schools are closed. The Kane County Regional Office of Education website offers a great Public Schools Directory and Private Schools Directory, for more information.
Libraries, Park Districts
Again, it’s not universal, libraries often are open on MLK Day.

Federal Government
Most federal government offices are closed. That includes Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory here in Kane County.
Banks
Not all banks observe the same holidays, but the Federal Reserve is closed, so most banks are, as well.
