Bitter cold and as much as 6 inches of snow could hit Kane County like a hammer Sunday night and extend all the way to Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch and a Wind Chill Advisory for Northern Illinois, including Kane County.

The Wind Chill Advisory is in effect from midnight to noon Monday, Dec. 5. The Winter Storm Watch is in effect Monday night through early Tuesday.

Wind chills could reach 20 to 30 degrees below zero. Frostbite can occur in a matter of minutes, so take that into account if you have to go outside for any reason.

A Winter Storm Watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel.

On Sunday, the Kane County Division of Transportation had 29 trucks out on the roads. Expect to see trucks from municipal and county departments out in force the next two days, as the storm hits home sometime between 6 p.m. Monday and 6 a.m. Tuesday. Obviously, weather can change, so tune into the National Weather Service for Kane County, IL, for up-to-date information.

The dry nature of the expected snowfall and increasing winds Tuesday “may result in drifting snow, particularly in open areas, even after snowfall has ended,” the NWS Winter Storm Watch says.
