Quick quiz: Can you name Kane County’s most-famous Native American?
You know, the 19th century warrior, patriot, protector of the land — the man who is quite possibly the most influential historical figure in Kane County history?
If not, do we have a wonderful “Learn From the Experts” program for you!
The Kane County Forest Preserve District’s nature program has rescheduled Black Hawk: “Warrior, Patriot and Protector of the Land” from March 3 to 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at Creek Bend Nature Center.
Dave Schoenknecht, professor at Rockford College, and Valerie Blaine, nature programs manager at Forest Preserve District of Kane County, will lead a discussion based on readings from Black Hawk’s 1833 autobiography. The program will look at key concepts such as land rights, sustainable living and spiritual connections to land. Attendees will discuss what we can learn today from Black Hawk’s words, some 182 years ago.
Why are we telling you this now? Because advance registration is required, and because this is a program that history buffs should really enjoy.
This Learn From the Experts program is for adults age 18 and older, and has a registration fee of $10. Registrants will receive a reading guide to the e-book, prior to the program. Call 630-444-3190 or email programs@kaneforest.com to register. Visit www.kaneforest.com for more information.
Creek Bend Nature Center is located within LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve at 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles.
Learn from the Experts programs are taught by experts in their respective fields and offer in-depth learning opportunities about our local ecology. The programs are offered through a partnership with the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, St. Charles Park District and Geneva Park District.
