Freeland Foods Voluntarily Recalls Sunflower Seed Product

The Kane County Health Department is advising residents that the Freeland Foods, Inc. of San Jose, CA, is voluntarily recalling the Go Raw Organic Sunflower Seed product, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Although there have been no reported illnesses to date associated with this product, Freeland Foods asks that consumers who have purchased this product destroy or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. The Go Raw Organic Sunflower Seed with the lot number “Enjoy before August 22, 2015 R5,” was distributed nationwide and Canada through distributors, retailers and direct customers. At this time, this is the only lot that is affected by this recall.

Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
