Hey, There Was An Election Tuesday! (And Not Just in Chicago)
Probably, you’ve heard a little bit of the to-do about the Tuesday, Feb. 24, primary in the city of Chicago, a race that was a little like Groundhog Day because Chicago voters got to decide whether Mayor Rahm Emanuel will face six more weeks of winter campaigning.
Just in case you missed it, there was an election Tuesday in Kane County, as well, and its primary (pardon the pun) purpose was to determine whose names will appear on the village of Campton Hills ballot in April.
Campton Township voters who went to the polls on Tuesday saw a primary ballot that included Harry Blecker for village president, no candidates filed for village clerk and three candidates vying for three open seats on the Village Board: Susan P. George, Michael T. O’Dwyer and Laura B. Andersen. But there was more to the ballot than met the eye, because there were also two people who declared as write-in candidates: Nicholas G. Girka for village clerk and Steve Galloway for village trustee.
In order for a write-in candidate for village clerk to win a spot on the April ballot, he had to receive 1 percent of the 1,744 votes cast for village clerk in 2011 — which would amount to 18 votes. According to the results posted Tuesday night on the Kane County Clerk’s website, Girka easily surpassed that mark, receiving 123 write-in votes.
For a write-in trustee candidate to win a spot on the April 7 ballot, he had to receive at least 10 percent of the total votes cast for the lowest vote-earning trustee candidate whose name was actually printed on the primary ballot. In this case, Michael T. O’Dwyer received 227 votes, so Galloway needed at least 23 votes to make the April 7 ballot. He, too, managed that by a wide margin, gathering 107 write-in votes.
So, with all that said, the following are the results from Tuesday’s primary. I’ll double-check this Wednesday, but I believe the name listed below are also the names village of Campton Hills voters will see on the April 7 election ballot:
VILLAGE OF CAMPTON HILLS FOR PRESIDENT
(Vote for 1)
- Harry Blecker — 251 votes
VILLAGE OF CAMPTON HILLS FOR CLERK
(Vote for 1)
- Nicholas G. Girka (write-in) — 123 votes
VILLAGE OF CAMPTON HILLS FOR TRUSTEE
(Vote for 3)
- Susan P. George — 249 votes
- Michael T. O’Dwyer — 227 votes
- Laura B. Andersen — 248 votes
- Steven D. Galloway (write-in) — 107 votes
