Hollywood = ‘Birdman’; Kane County = ‘American Sniper’
The parenthetical title for the movie that won Best Picture on Sunday night was (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).
Some folks from Kane County might say that was apropos, considering the divide between the Kane County Connects reader poll results and those of the 87th Annual Academy Awards.
Birdman was the night’s big winner, and you don’t have to take our word for it — that’s pretty much the verbatim headline from multiple media sources. The movie won awards for best picture, director (Alejandro González Iñárritu), cinematography and original screenplay.
In the contrast of Hollywood versus Heartland, of course, it doesn’t really matter what us folks in Illinois think. We aren’t members of the Academy and don’t get a say. These are, after all, the Oscars and not the People’s Choice Awards.
In our KC Connects ultra-non-scientific reader poll, 55 percent of the 313 voters said American Sniper was the best picture of 2015. The Imitation Game was second, with 10 percent of the vote, The Grand Budapest Hotel was third with 9 percent, Boyhood was fourth with 8 percent, and Selma was fifth with 7 percent.
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) was a distant sixth, with 6 percent of the Kane County vote. It was followed by The Theory of Everything with 4 percent and Whiplash, with 1 percent of the vote.
