Heads up if you have plans to drive into Chicago this weekend or next.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that a weekend closure on eastbound I-290 (Eisenhower Expressway) for Peoria Street Bridge work will begin, weather permitting, at 11 p.m. on both Friday, Feb. 20, and Friday, Feb. 27.

In order to complete the work, the left lane of eastbound I-290 will be closed between Ashland Avenue to Halsted Street. These closures are intended for the Peoria Street Bridge’s Pier 1 demolition, and the installation of caissons for new pier construction of the Bridge. Temporary soil retention along the CTA will also be installed.

After each weekend’s closure, the lane will be reopened by 5 a.m. on the following Monday.
This work is part of the ongoing Jane Byrne Interchange Reconstruction. Work is currently underway reconstructing the Morgan Street, Halsted Street, Peoria Street bridges over I-290, and the Harrison Street Bridge over the Dan Ryan. The Jane Byrne Interchange connects the Eisenhower Expressway, Kennedy Expressway, Dan Ryan Expressway and Congress Parkway. Over 400,000 vehicles pass through the interchange on a daily basis. This project is being undertaken to improve safety and mobility, and reduce congestion through the interchange.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
