CASA Kane County will hold its 11th annual “Hands Around the Courthouse” event April 9 in celebration of National Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month.

The event takes place at noon Thursday, April 9, at the Kane County Courthouse on South Third Street in Geneva. Attendees are asked to arrive 15 to 30 minutes prior to the event in order to pass through courthouse security.

As part of the event, attendees will be asked to join hands for a moment of silence reflecting on all the abused and neglected children in our community, state and nation. Speakers include 16th Judicial Circuit Abuse and Neglect Judge William J. Parkhurst, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon and CASA Kane County Executive Director Gloria Bunce.

CASA Kane County recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers who serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) for children in court due to abuse, neglect or private guardianship.  They are appointed by the Juvenile and Probate Court Judges to be the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) for children under the age of 21.  CASA/GAL volunteers spend time with the children, families, teachers, therapists, and medical professionals to collect information that helps the Judge make the best interest decision for a safe, caring and permanent home for each child.  CASA Kane County’s 250 active CASA/GAL volunteers advocate for nearly 550 children annually!

CASA/GAL volunteers are everyday citizens who are specially trained and appointed by the court to advocate for the safety and well-being of children who are victims of abuse or neglect.  They stand up for children and their futures.
