April 7 Races Too Close to Call in Kaneland, Geneva

It looks like the Pingree Grove race for village president has been decided by two votes — but a few other Kane County election results have at least the potential to change in the next couple days as election officials wait for mailed-in ballots to arrive in the wake of the April 7 consolidated election.

Kane County Chief Deputy Clerk and Director of Elections Suzanne Fahnestock said Tuesday that mail-in ballots can be received until April 21 and added to the totals, and could affect a couple races. The 312-310 finish for Pingree Grove village president isn’t one of them, however, because there were no absentee ballots requested for that particular race.

In that Pingree Grove village president race, Steve Wiedmeyer won with 312 votes (49.84%) to Greg L. Marston’s 310 votes (49.52%).

Two Kane County races are being monitored closely as absentee ballots roll in: the Geneva City Council Ward 1 contest between Pat Lenski and Tara Burghart and the Kaneland School Board race, where Dan Nagel is nipping at the heels of Ryan Kerry in the race for the fourth open seat.

According to election law, the Kane County Clerk’s Office waits until April 21 for mail-in ballots to come back. After that, the office has five business days to canvass the votes, then turns in the final totals to the Illinois State Board of Elections on April 28. At that time, candidates have five days to submit requests for review or recount of the results.

In the Geneva Ward 1 race, Burghart’s lead has actually increased via the mail-in ballots received so far. Lenski trailed Burghart by seven votes on election night; the gap is up to 10 votes — 253 to 243 — as of Tuesday morning, April 14.

In the Kaneland School District 302 race, eight candidates were vying for four board seats. Teresa Witt (1,132), Gale E. Pavlak (1,107) and Peter Lopatin (885) were the top vote-getters. The bottom three finishers were Pamela Voorhees (838), Jerry Elliott (762) and Tony F. Valente (719).

The middle are two candidates: Kerry (870) and Nagel (864).

Just as an FYI, an absentee ballot needs to be postmarked by the day before the election.
