Enrique L. Torres, 31, formerly of the 3100 block of Fox Hill Road, Aurora, was sentenced late Wednesday, April 29, 2015, by Circuit Judge James C. Hallock to 25 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Torres was convicted Aug. 7, 2014, by a Kane County jury of attempted murder.

Prosecutors presented evidence that at about 3 a.m. April 14, 2007, Torres and two others were in a car in search of rival gang members. Torres was riding in the front passenger seat. The trio was in the vicinity of Summit and Hill avenues on Aurora’s near east side when they spotted the victim, who was in a car with one other person. The car Torres was riding in pulled up next to the victim’s car, and Torres lept out and began shooting his handgun at the victim’s car. The victim’s car took off, but not before three bullets from Torres’ handgun entered the victim’s car and pierced the drivers’ side headrest, and one of the bullets struck the victim in the left thigh.

Later that day, Torres shot and killed a Hillside man, 31-year-old Edgar Hill, in an Aurora hotel parking lot in DuPage County. Torres was convicted of the murder in that case and sentenced to 60 years in prison.

The sentence issued April 29 is to be served consecutive to the 60-year sentence Torres is serving for the DuPage County murder sentence.

“This is a significant sentence, and Aurora, as well as Kane and DuPage counties are safer now that Mr. Torres is in prison for the rest of his life. Mr. Torres chose the gang life and all of the horrible decisions come with it. Because of his choices and his willing participation in gang crimes, his life as a free man was over before he was 30 years old. That is the danger of joining a gang,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.
