So, who won on Tuesday?
Here’s a list of the vote totals reported from the Kane County Election Results page, along with a few observations and a couple of quick caveats.
First, the Caveats
(1) This list is really long. So you might have to do a lot of scrolling to find the election in your area of Kane County. In races with multiple candidates, you’ll also have to figure out the winners based on the totals — I didn’t have time to highlight the winners in boldface or color.
(2) I’m one guy, and I’m fallible. Really fallible, in fact. So, don’t just take this for the final word. Go to the Kane County Election Results page and the Aurora Election Commission website results page for the real skinny.
(3) In some races, you have to add the Kane County results and the Aurora Election Commission results. (There are some races — school districts, for example — that spread into other, neighbor counties, as well.)
(4) A quick explanation of percentages: We’re reporting the percentages in a straight cut-and-paste from the website. Sometimes, the percentages you see in each contest won’t add up to 100 percent. That’s because not everyone who picks up a ballot votes in every contest, because there are write-in votes for candidates whose names weren’t on the ballot, and a variety of other reasons.
(5) These are unofficial totals. The final vote requires canvassing.
Now, Some Observations
(1) You really ought to vote. Why? Look how close some of these races were. In Geneva Ward 1, Pat Lenski lost to Tara Burghart by seven votes. In the village of Burlington four-person musical chairs race, Duane “Curly” Wilkison was the one left standing when the music stopped — by a margin of three votes. And in the race for Pingree Grove village president, Steve Wiedmeyer won by two votes over Greg L. Marston: 312-310.
(2) In the Big Kahuna races for mayor or village president, you just read the margin of victory (can you say “recount”?) for Wiedmeyer in Pingree Grove. In Elgin, incumbent Mayor David Kaptain defeated Joseph P. Galvan and in Lilly Lake, Jesse Heffernan defeated Mike Louis Carlson, 116-86.
(3) The unusual election for village president in Campton Hills pitted an incumbent who was running as a write-in candidate (Patsy Smith) against a challenger whose name was on the ballot (Harry Blecker.) Blecker won that one, 1,459-633.
(4) In the Batavia School Board race, a former teacher who was chastised by the district for advising students they had a Fifth Amendment right not to answer a survey on at-risk behavior back in 2013 won election in 2015. In fact, John D. Dryden was the top vote-getter in the eight-candidate race for three seats.
(5) Kaneland School District 302 is one of the school board elections that include both the AEC and Kane County numbers, so you have to add them up. If my addition is correct (and that’s always iffy), the Aurora Election Commission totals didn’t change the Kane County order of finish. Teresa Witt, Gale E. Pavlak, Peter Lopatin and Ryan Kerry won election. They edged out Dan Nagel, Pamela Voorhees, Jerry Elliot and Tony F. Valente.
(6) One referendum out of seven in Kane County passed muster: West Aurora School District’s building bond referendum. It will be interesting to see the analysis of the District 129 win. You can read more about the Kane County referendum results in this article.
