Municipal Elections: 3 Big Kahunas, 21 Board Contested Races in Kane County
Holy municipal elections, Batman!
I’m counting and double-counting, so if I get this wrong, let me know, but the tally appears to be 24 municipal races coming up in Kane County that will be decided by voters on April 7.
Of those, three are for the Big Kahuna, the mayor or village president, and 21 are in the category of board member — alderman or trustee, depending on the municipality.
And those are just the contested races on the ballot. In the Campton Hills race for village president, Village Trustee Harry Blecker is facing off against Village President Patsy Smith, who is running as a write-in candidate.
Just as an FYI, the basic difference between a city and a village form of government is that the city elects a mayor and aldermen, generally two aldermen from each ward, and a village elects a village president and trustees. Aldermen (alderpersons, ward representatives — hard to find a gender-neutral term that trips lightly off the tongue) represent a certain geographic part of town (a ward), while trustees are elected at large and represent the whole town.
The biggest of the Big Kane-huna races is in Elgin, a city of 110,145 people, where David Kaptain and Joseph P. Galvan are squaring off. In Pingree Grove, the contest for village president is between Greg L. Marston and Steve Wiedmeyer. In Lilly Lake, Mike Louis Carlson goes up against Jesse Heffernan in the race for village president.
As another FYI, Kane County has two organizations that run elections — the Kane County Clerk’s Office and the Aurora Election Commission. In this tally, there are two contested aldermanic races in Aurora. The rest are on the Kane County ballot.
