VIDEO: ROE’s Life-Safety Coordinator Actually Saves Man’s Life

Health & Life Safety Coordinator Mark Bozik has been employed with the Kane County Regional Office of Education for about three years. When he is not inspecting school-related buildings, he also serves as a North Aurora firefighter and paramedic.

Bozik was chaperoning his daughter’s West Aurora High School field trip to Brookfield Zoo, but before they boarded the bus, he saw that a fellow chaperone had collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. The 64-year-old chaperone of another student began having seizures and then stopped breathing. Mark stepped in, began performing CPR, then connected the defibrillator to get the grandfather’s heart started again.

When the Aurora paramedics arrived, the grandfather was awake and talking.

“I had inspected that defibrillator about two months before, part of the Regional Office of Education’s annual inspection for all school buildings,” Bozik said.

The grandfather has spent a few days in the hospital but is expected to fully recover.
