Drug Dealer Escapes GPS Device, But Not His Court Sentencing
An Aurora cocaine dealer who escaped from a court-ordered GPS device has been sentenced to prison.
Eric Chapa, 30, last address of the 1100 block of Trask St., Aurora, was sentenced Friday, May 22, 2015, by Associate Judge Clint Hull to 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Chapa was convicted in absentia on Jan. 9, 2015, by Judge Hull of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a Class X felony.
On Feb. 20, 2014, Aurora police served a search warrant at Chapa’s residence. Police found more than 600 grams of cocaine, as well as approximately 100 grams of marijuana. Chapa told police that he sells cocaine and earns a monthly profit of more than $3,000.
Chapa had been free on $7,500 bond. On Aug. 15, 2014, Chapa managed to free himself from a court-ordered GPS device and fled. His whereabouts are unknown. Anyone with information on Chapa should call Aurora Police Investigators at (630) 256-5500 or Aurora Area CrimeStoppers at (630) 892-1000.
According to Illinois law, Chapa must serve at least 75 percent of the sentence. He receives credit for 91 days served in the Kane County jail.
The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Bridget Sabbia and Scott Schwertley.
“Mr. Chapa will resurface at some point, and when he does he will realize that he compounded his problems by fleeing. Thanks to the Aurora Police Department for their hard work in this case,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.
