Hey, Jennifer Jarland! I Know You’ve Got Great Document-Shredding AND Electronics Recycling Opportunities for Kane County Citizens, But What About the Small-Business Owner? Why Can’t We Recycle at Your Events?

The Kane County Recycling Office manages recycling programs for residents of Kane County; programs like the monthly electronics and book recycling collection event and the permanent electronics drop-off locations, as well as the quarterly document shredding events. We always have a huge turnout, and it is great to see everyone recycling. However, we need to stress that these programs are for residents of Kane County only, not from residents of other counties and not from businesses, please.

Due to many reasons, we are unable to receive material from businesses of any kind, whether corporate, family business, schools, non-profits or other. If you are a business, we ask you to please utilize the resources below to recycle your items. I know that it is tempting to bring your computers or documents and present them as your personal material, but please consider that by doing so you threaten the continuity of these programs. How or why, you ask?

For one thing, the electronics recycling law covers residential recycling programs but does not include businesses, so the mechanisms that make the recycling program viable are limited to a weight quantity that we can receive each year. When that amount is exceeded the program may have to stop before the end of the year.

This includes the monthly event and the permanent Public Works Department drop-offs in Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles and West Dundee. Businesses are responsible for the proper disposal of their equipment, and may contact any recycling company registered with the Illinois EPA, including these local firms to assist in your ongoing electronics recycling needs:

Confidential document shredding is another program where we are often overwhelmed by businesses taking advantage of the free service. Unfortunately, this also threatens the viability of the program, as it does have a cost for the county, and also several times the trucks have become full and we’ve had to turn residents away.

By the way, we’ve served 700 cars average per shred event; that’s 25,000 pounds of documents that fill both trucks! So again, we ask that businesses please refrain from using this service, so that we can continue to offer secure document destruction for the residents of Kane County in the future.
