Hilarious National Exhibit ‘Awkward Family Photos’ Coming to Geneva History Museum
The Geneva History Museum will be the first Midwest host for the national traveling exhibition “Awkward Family Photos” from June 6 through Aug. 15 in their feature gallery at 113 S. Third St., Geneva.
This exhibition, which includes more than 200 classic Awkward Family Photos and hilarious “behind the awkwardness” stories from the actual families, was curated and designed by Mike Bender and Doug Chermack. It is the hope of the creators that this exhibition will “bring our families a little closer together as we acknowledge those special times when we wished we were a lot farther apart.”
Awkward Family Photos website was launched in 2009 when Bender saw an awkward vacation photo hung in his parents’ house. Realizing there were probably plenty of other people with their own awkward family pics, childhood friends Mike and Doug set out to create a friendly place where people could share their own odd family moments. The site quickly took off and became an internet sensation, with submissions from around the world.
Awkward Family Photos the exhibition aims to explore the perfectly imperfect moments that come with the family experience and provide a place for people to celebrate the awkwardness while taking comfort in the fact that their family is not alone.
This exhibition’s visit to Geneva is sponsored in part by Strawflower Shop and the Kane County Chronicle. The Geneva History Museum is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays with a $2 per person admission which includes the main gallery “Geneva’s Story.” For more information, visit GenevaHistoryMuseum.org or call 630-232-4951.
