Illinois Tollway: Lane, Bike Path Closures Part of Route 31 Interchange Project in Elgin

The Kane County Division of Transportation reports that a portion of the Fox River Trail in Elgin will be closed to bicycle and pedestrian access throughout the month of June to accommodate drainage system work as part of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) Fox River Bridge Project.

The temporary closure of 1,000 feet of the Fox River Trail just north of the Fox River Bridge is scheduled to begin June 2. The closed section of the trail is adjacent to Duncan Avenue in Elgin, just north of the Fox River Bridge. The Illinois Tollway is reconstructing the bridge carrying I-90 over the Fox River as part of the $2.5 billion I-90 Rebuilding and Widening Project.

The local roadway closure has been coordinated with the city of Elgin and the Forest Preserve District of Kane County. Additional information can be found at www.illinoistollway.com.

According to an Illinois Tollway press release, temporary, overnight lane closures on Illinois Route 31 in Elgin are expected to continue through late June for the removal of the bridge carrying westbound I-90 over the roadway. The removal and reconstruction of the bridge carrying eastbound I-90 over Illinois Route 31 will be scheduled in 2016.

Weather permitting, overnight lane closures will be scheduled as needed on Illinois Route 31 including closure of one lane in each direction on Illinois Route 31 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and may include intermittent, full closures of the roadway, lasting no longer than 15 minutes each, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. All lanes on Illinois Route 31 will reopen daily by 6 a.m.

The Illinois Route 31 Interchange Project is reconstructing the I-90 bridges over Illinois Route 31, as well as the eight ramps that make up the interchange, and includes improvements to the ramp toll plazas. All work is scheduled to be complete in 2016.

The Illinois Route 31 Interchange Project is being coordinated with Kane County, the city of Elgin and the Illinois Department of Transportation, along with local police and fire departments. Up to 21,000 vehicles use the existing interchange daily.

The Illinois Route 31 Interchange Project includes reconstruction of the bridges carrying I-90 over Illinois Route 31 and eight interchange ramps to accommodate the I-90 Rebuilding and Widening Project and to improve traffic flow. The Illinois Route 31 Bridge and ramps were constructed as part of the original Tollway system in the 1950s.

Screen Shot 2015-05-28 at 10.17.13 AMIn 2015, the westbound entrance ramps to I-90 and the westbound exit ramps to Illinois Route 31 and the entrance ramp carrying northbound Illinois Route 31 traffic to eastbound I-90 are scheduled to be reconstructed. In 2016, the entrance ramp carrying southbound Illinois Route 31 traffic to eastbound I-90 and the exit ramps carrying eastbound I90 traffic to Illinois Route 31 are scheduled to be reconstructed.

In addition, the existing toll plazas on the eastbound entrance and westbound exit ramps will be

reconstructed to provide one I-PASS or Pay Online lane and one automatic coin machine. The $19 million Illinois Route 31 Interchange Project is funded by the Illinois Tollway’s 15-year, $12 billion capital program, Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future.
