Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen signs the agreement with Dynegy Energy to secure lower electric rates for residents and small businesses of unincorporated Kane County.

Kane County has entered into an agreement with Dynegy Energy Services, LLC for electricity supply for residents and small businesses in unincorporated portions of the county, excluding Aurora and Dundee townships.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen signed the agreement with Dynegy on June 3, and the program will go into effect in August 2015.

The purpose of the electric aggregation program is to provide residents and small businesses in unincorporated areas of Kane County with a cost savings over Commonwealth Edison’s rates, and Kane County was able to secure a lower rate.

Under the agreement with Dynegy, the fixed rate will be 6.533 cents per kilowatt hour for the first 12 months, then decrease to 6.065 cents per kilowatt hour for the last 12 months of the two-year term. The base ComEd rate, which adjusts monthly, is expected to average 7.145 cents per kilowatt hour from August 2015 to May 2016, plus or minus a half-cent Purchased Electricity Adjustment. The county’s program with Dynegy will never charge a PEA fee.

Residents and small businesses in unincorporated Kane County will receive information via the mail by the end of June from Dynegy that will describe the rates and terms of the agreement. At that time, they will not need to do anything to be automatically enrolled in the program and will be switched to the lower electric rate at their meter read date in August.

Ratepayers already receiving supply from an alternative supplier will receive a different notice that will inform them of how to opt in to Kane County’s program.

Additional information on the electric aggregation program will be announced by Kane County in mid-June, and a new website will also be made available to help answer questions from residents about the program.

Voters in unincorporated Aurora Township and Dundee Township passed referendums in November 2012 allowing their respective township boards to establish an electric aggregation program and therefore did not participate in the April 2014 vote to allow the county to establish an electric aggregation program in those jurisdictions.
