UPDATE: More Rain, Saturated Ground Means Flash Flood Warning in Kane County
UPDATE: 4:30 p.m. Monday
The National Weather Services has activated a Flash Flood Warning for Kane County as of 4:24 p.m. The warning is in effect until 10:30 p.m.
DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A BROKEN LINE OF THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPING FROM THE WESTERN SUBURBS OF CHICAGO WEST TO THE QUAD CITIES. ADDITIONAL THUNDERSTORMS ARE FORECAST TO CONTINUE DEVELOPING AND FILLING OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS.
THESE THUNDERSTORMS ARE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING RAINFALL RATES OF 1 TO 2 INCHES IN LESS THAN AN HOUR…WITH ISOLATED TOTALS OVER 3 INCHES POSSIBLE IN THE WARNING AREA. FLASH FLOODING IS FORECAST TO DEVELOP SHORTLY. THE INTENSE RAINFALL RATES WILL LIKELY CAUSE FLASH FLOODING TO DEVELOP RAPIDLY THIS EVENING.
BE ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS IF TRAVELING THIS EVENING. DO NOT DRIVE INTO AREAS WHERE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY.
Original Article
The National Weather Service is expecting more heavy rainfall and has issued a Flash Flood Watch of Kane County.
The Flash Flood Watch is in place until late Monday night, June 15, 2015, so be careful driving.
- PERIODS OF THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TODAY INTO THIS EVENING ACROSS NORTHERN ILLINOIS. THE ATMOSPHERE IS FAVORABLE FOR STORMS TO PRODUCE VERY HEAVY RAINFALL RATES. IN ADDITION, STORMS MAY TRAIN OVER THE SAME AREA, FURTHER INCREASING THE LIKELIHOOD OF FLOODING.
- DUE TO RECENT BOUTS OF RAINFALL OVER THE PAST WEEK TO 10 DAYS, THE GROUND IS NEARLY SATURATED IN MANY PLACES AND ADDITIONAL RAIN COULD VERY WELL LEAD TO IMMEDIATE RUNOFF AND RAPID FLOODING, AS WELL AS QUICK STREAM AND CREEK RISES.
- FLOODING OF SOME ROADWAYS MAY OCCUR, AND THE TIMING OF THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL MAY IMPACT THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EARLY
EVENING COMMUTE.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS
A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.
YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.
