‘New Kind of Development’ Serosun Farms Holds Grand Opening Saturday
A development billed as the first of its kind in Kane County will cut ribbons and invite the public for a look-see on Saturday.
Serosun Farms is a sustainable community, which “blends peaceful, pastoral living with modern convenience,” according to its website.
The development is planned around a working farm and designed specifically as “a refuge from city life” without sacrificing comforts. The open house is from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at 45 W 489 Berner Road near Hampshire.
From a planning perspective, the development is a fascinating model, emphasizing many of the ideas Kane County promotes in its own 2040 plan: healthy living, transportation, land preservation and sustainability.
Residents will “enjoy hundreds of acres of open space with restored prairie and woodlands while staying connected through the latest technology and being pampered by a wide range of amenities,” the website says.
The grand opening celebrates completion of a new model home and includes a technology demonstration.
“After a long wait it is finally here,” the open house announcement says.
Serosun Farms is at its core a farm preservation project. Seventy-five percent of the farm estate is reserved for farming and open space/natural areas. Presently, the majority of farming is organic horse hay but owners are slowly converting to artisanal vegetables and fruits. The development has 5 acres in its demonstration gardens that are dedicated to specialty vegetables and fruits focusing on testing heritage and heritage varieties.

ABSTRACT:
Serosun Farms is a rural sustainable community built around 410 acres of farm and open space. At its core Serosun is a farmland preservation project using innovative zoning strategies developed in conjunction with Kane County. The community requires that all homes being built on the farm meet sustainable and healthy requirements as well as are designed with architectural styling to blend with its rural flavor.
Swainson’s House is the first model and demonstration home to be built as part of the project and will be used as both a sales and design center but also an education demonstration tool for the project. It features many sustainable and healthy home elements while being a luxury country home. Some sustainable features include native based landscaping, permeable pavements, a rain harvesting system, and a green roof. It will also be included as a Healthy Homes demonstration home.
