Presence Saint Joseph Hospital – Elgin is one of the safest hospitals in Illinois according to a new study by Consumer Reports. For the 2015 rankings, Consumer Reports rated patient safety at 176 hospitals in Illinois. Presence Saint Joseph Hospital-Elgin is ranked among the Top 10 hospitals in the state.

The rankings are based on five categories that relate to hospital safety: avoiding infections, avoiding readmissions, communicating about medications and discharge, appropriate use of chest and abdominal scanning, and avoiding mortality (medical and surgical). The data is gathered from public sources including the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Presence Saint Joseph Hospital – Elgin scored especially well in several patient outcome measures, including avoiding surgical-site infections, avoiding catheter-associated urinary tract infections and avoiding MRSA infections. In addition, Presence Saint Joseph received high ratings for doctor-patient communications, nurse-patient communication, pain control and appropriate use of chest scanning.
