A 17-year-old Aurora teen is facing three felony weapons charges in connection with two separate incidents that took place on June 28 and 29 on Aurora’s West Side.

Since the teen is charged as a juvenile, police cannot release his name, but he is currently in the Kane County Juvenile Detention Center in St. Charles charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and a single count of possession of a stolen firearm.

The juvenile was taken into custody at about 5 p.m. Monday when officers were responding to a shots-fired call in the area of Galena Boulevard and North Harrison Avenue and an SUV in which the boy was riding that fit the description of the vehicle involved, was spotted. The vehicle, a white Chevrolet Trailblazer that was headed northbound on Elmwood Drive at Plum Street, was also occupied by three other male teens, ages14, 15, and 17. As police investigated, they discovered the shots were apparently fired from a BB gun by an occupant of the SUV toward an unknown target. No one was injured in the shooting.

The same Trailblazer was also thought to have been involved in an aggravated assault about an hour earlier in the 600 block of North Elmwood when one of its occupants flashed a gun and yelled gang slogans at a group of people who were standing in a yard in that block. Both a handgun and two BB guns were discovered in the Trailblazer when it was stopped by police. The handgun had been reported stolen in a June 25 home burglary on Aurora’s West Side, in the 2300 block of Goldenrod Court.

Upon investigation, officers were able to tie the vehicle and the juvenile who was charged to both incidents on Monday. However, he was only charged in connection with the aggravated assault on Elmwood (aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a stolen firearm) while the investigation continues into the incident at Galena and Harrison. The other three males were released to their parents pending further investigation.

The second unlawful use of a weapon charge stems from an incident Sunday in the 800 block of Foran Lane when the boy allegedly fired a weapon at around 7:53 p.m. then ran from the scene with another subject. Nothing was hit in that incident, which also remains under investigation.
