Two individuals apprehended after a weekend armed encounter with Aurora police have been identified and face multiple charges.

Rene Muro, 23, of the 300 block of Beach Street in Aurora and Erik Esparza, 20, of St. Charles each were charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a firearm by a gang member and resisting / obstructing a police officer, according to an Aurora Police Department press release.

Muro was also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. His bail was set at $500,000 ($50,000 bond) with his next court date set for July 15. Esparza’s bail set at $200,000 ($20,000 bond) with his next court date set for July, 23.

Both are being held in the Kane County Jail.

According to reports, Muro and Esparza were involved in a confrontation with police officers from the Aurora Police Departments Special Operations Group at around 7:20 p.m. July 11 in the 1000 block of Pearl Street on the city’s south east side.

The officers were working together in a two-person capacity when they observed a suspicious vehicle occupied by four male subjects driving around the neighborhood. Two subjects exited the vehicle and were walking between the houses near the intersection of Pearl Street and Parker Avenue carrying handguns, police said.

When officers stopped their vehicle and attempted to make contact, the men raised their handguns and pointed them in the direction of the officers. “One of the officers, fearing for his safety and the safety of his partner discharged his duty weapon in the direction of the subjects,” the press release said.

Both subjects took off running through the yards with the officers pursuing them on foot. One was apprehended, the other subject was able to elude the officers.

Assisted by Montgomery police and Kane County sheriff’s deputies, responding officers set up a perimeter in the area where the second subject was last seen on foot. After a short period of time and with the assistance of the Kane County Sheriff’s police K-9, the second subject was taken into custody.

Neither subject was struck by police gunfire but the second subject was taken to an area hospital to be treated for a dog bite to his arm, the press release said.

Aurora Police Investigators are continuing to investigate the incident.
