Kane County employees are hosting a mobile food pantry in hopes of feeding 300 families.

Hosted by the Northern Illinois Food Bank and sponsored by Kane County, the event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 6, at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva, IL.

Food will be supplied on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. A registration table will be open during the event, and food is free to low-income people in need. Residents are asked to bring bags or boxes in which to carry food.

“The only thing we need right now is for people to spread the word,” said Susan Brown, who is helping to coordinate the employee-led Kane County effort. “If you live in Kane County and don’t have enough to eat, this mobile food pantry can help.”

The food pantry is part of a summer-long effort to give back to the community. Formerly known as the “Holiday Helping Hands” initiative, employees changed the theme to “Kane County Connects Employees With the Community” and the timing of the event, in order to raise awareness that hunger affects Kane County residents year-round — not just during the holidays.

At a June food drive, Kane County employees collected three huge bins of food and more than $3,738 in monetary donations that will benefit 29 area food pantries and help subsidize the mobile food pantry.
