An Elgin man is headed to prison for dealing heroin to an undercover officer on multiple occasions.

Christopher M. Kanehl, 28, of the of the 9N block of Muirhead Lane, Elgin, was sentenced Thursday, Aug. 13, 2015, by Circuit Judge John A. Barsanti to nine years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Kanehl pleaded guilty Feb. 20, 2015, to unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a Class 1 felony, and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, a Class 1 felony, in separate incidents.

Prosecutors presented evidence that at about 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9, 2013, Kanehl delivered 17 baggies containing a total of at least 1.2 grams of heroin to an undercover Elgin officer outside a business in the 200 block of Randall Road, South Elgin. Kanehl delivered heroin to the officer on two other occasions that week.

At about 7:45 p.m. Oct. 8, he delivered 10 baggies containing at least 1.1 grams of heroin outside a business in the 800 block of Randall Road, Elgin. And at about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 11, Kanehl delivered 13 baggies containing at least 1.2 grams of heroin to the undercover officer outside a busy restaurant in the 100 block of North McLean Blvd., South Elgin. At the time of the Oct. 11 delivery, Kanehl was ingesting heroin in his car. After the Oct. 11 transaction, a warrant was issued for Kanehl’s arrest.

On Nov. 4, 2013, Kanehl was taken into custody on the warrant. At the time of his arrest he was in possession of 10 baggies of heroin weighing at least 3.1 grams.

According to Illinois law, Kanehl is eligible for day-for-day credit. He receives credit for at least 646 days served while awaiting trial.

The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Kelly M. Orland.
