Tax-Info Extravaganza: 6 Township Assessment Lists See Print Aug. 13-14
Property-tax assessment lists for not one, not two, but six Kane County townships will see print Thursday and Friday this week.
The assessment changes for properties in these six townships will be published on Aug. 13 and Aug. 14 in these fine local newspapers:
- Plato Township assessment changes are being published Thursday, Aug. 13, in The Elgin Courier-News.
- Blackberry Township and Kaneville Township assessment changes are being published Thursday, Aug. 13, in the Elburn Herald.
- Sugar Grove Township assessment changes are being published Thursday, Aug. 13, in The Aurora Beacon-News.
- Burlington Township and Geneva Township assessment changes are being published Friday, Aug. 14, in the Kane County Chronicle.
For the record, you also can view an online PDF version of the list on the Supervisor of Assessments website on the same date that your assessment is published in the newspaper.
After all revisions and corrections by the your local township assessor are applied, an equalization factor is calculated. The factors for those six townships are as follows:
- Each non-farm property in Plato, Blackberry, Kaneville, and Geneva townships was equalized with a factor of 1.0000.
- Each non-farm property in Burlington Township was equalized with a factor of 0.9547.
- Each non-farm property in Sugar Grove Township was equalized with a factor of 1.0458.
The publication of your property’s assessed value starts the clock ticking for the approximate one-month time period when you can contest the assessment. In other words, if you think your property was assessed at a higher value than its market value, and if you live in one of the six Kane County townships mentioned above, you have until Sept. 14, 2015, to file a complaint with the Kane County Board of Review.
Generally speaking, if you can provide enough documented evidence that your assessment was too high, you can get your assessment lowered.
To obtain assessment information about a property in any township in Kane County, you need to call the township assessor’s office or visit your local assessor’s website. You can do that by checking this Kane County Township Assessors directory, located on the Kane County Supervisor of Assessments website.
