A Kane County K-9 unit was among the area law enforcement agencies supporting a massive manhunt for three suspected gunmen in nearby Fox Lake who allegedly were involved in the killing of a Fox Lake police officer. But that all-out manhunt ended as of Thursday, Sept. 4, 2015, after a woman was charged with faking a report about the suspects in the killing.

According to multiple media reports, Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, a 30-year veteran of the Fox Lake Police Department, was fatally wounded early Tuesday. Gliniewicz, 52, was married and the father of four children.

At around 8 a.m. Tuesday, Gliniewicz was called to investigate three suspects near Route 12 and Sayton Road in Fox Lake. Gliniewicz pursued on foot, according to media reports, then called for backup via radio. When officers arrived, they found Gliniewicz’ body in a marshy area with a gunshot wound.

Police used helicopters and received help from other agencies, including Kane County, to form a perimeter and begin the search for the three suspect. More than 100 officers were expected to search during the night.

The manhunt for Gliniewicz’ killers continued well into the night of Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, as police searched through hundreds of leads on social media and surveillance video.

On Thursday, reports said Kristin Kiefer, 30, a Vernon Hills nanny, admitted she lied about the suspects in order to get the attention of the family she worked for, according to the Chicago Tribune and other sources.

The search for the killer or killers continues on Thursday, however. According to the WLS website, there was intense police activity in Volo, south of Fox Lake, late Wednesday night. Police still are searching for three suspects — two white men and one black man — who police said should be considered armed and dangerous.

Grant Community High School was in lockdown for part of the day on Tuesday,

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the investigation.

Illinois Fraternal Order of Police President Chris Southwood released a statement: “Today the Fraternal Order of Police lost a fellow member and brother who died heroically serving his community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the slain officer’s family, friends and fellow police officers. He leaves a legacy of several decades of service to Fox Lake for which we are humbly grateful.”
