‘A Positive Interaction’ — Elgin Police Video Goes Viral With 7 Million-Plus Views

This is one of those stories we love to share, and we hope, you love to read.

A candid, live video of an Elgin police officer’s handling of a potentially volatile confrontation with loiterers lands more than 7 million page views and becomes a showcase for cool and calm, quality police work.

That’s exactly what happened with the YouTube video shown here and posted by “Viral Hog” under the headline “A Positive Interaction.” The Daily Herald reports that the video was taken by Geneva resident Jose Espinosa, a former resident of Elgin.

The video shows how police officer Ken Ericson diffuses the situation, dealing with the crowd of teenagers in a firm, familiar and positive way.

On the Elgin Police Department Facebook page, Chief Jeff Swaboda acknowledged the millions of clicks and countless shares the video has tallied over the past couple of days.

“Sgt. Ericson’s interaction makes us very proud,” Swaboda said. “He engaged Elgin’s youth in a manner that is expected of our officers and is far more commonplace than some may realize. Once we have our body-camera program in place, we expect we’ll be sharing even more positivity. Thank you for all of the kind words that have come our way and the appreciation that has been shown for Sgt. Ericson.”

The body-camera program reference is to the recent news reported by The Courier-News and other media that the department has received a $250,000 federal grant to allow police officers to be fitted with body cameras.
