Former Sixth Street School Demolition Set to Begin Sept. 16

A Kane County contractor will begin demolition operations of the former Sixth Street School building on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Earlier reports said superstructure demolition of the former Regional Office of Education site was expected to start Sept. 8, but work was delayed until the city of Geneva issued a demolition permit Sept. 15. Demolition of the building, 210 S. Sixth St., is expected to last three weeks, and final completion of the project is anticipated to be six weeks, weather permitting.

The city has advised the construction crew of permitted work hours, which are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays and holidays. The contractor also has been advised of the city’s requirements for dust control.

Residents who have questions or concerns about the Sixth Street School demolition can call the City’s Building Division at 630-262-0280.

The building site has been purchased by the Geneva Public Library District as a possible site for a future library campus.
