2nd UPDATE: Public Invited to Commemorate 9/11 at Ceremonies in Elgin, Carpentersville, Aurora

Events commemorating the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks seem to be dissipating as the years pass, but the cities of Aurora, Elgin and Carpentersville continue to honor the date.

A quick Internet search shows just three commemoration events in Kane County on the 14th anniversary of the event. If you know of additional ceremonies or services, please email nagelrick@co.kane.il.us.

Elgin

In partnership with the American Legion, the city of Elgin will host a September 11th ceremony on the City Hall Plaza (behind the Robert Gilliam Municipal Complex) at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11. All are invited to attend this service to remember those in public service who lost their lives 14 years ago and to honor those who continue to serve today.

Carpentersville

The Village of Carpentersville and Carpentersville Fire Department invites you to remember the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, and honor the first responders who sacrificed their lives in order to save others on that historical day.

The Remembrance Ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. in front of the Firefighter / 9-11 Memorial located at Carpentersville Fire Station No. 91, 213 Spring Street.  The True Patriot’s Care Foundation will again host a Healing Field flag display in the field west of the fire station.

Aurora

The Aurora Fire Department will be joined by the Aurora Police Department to honor the lives that were lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Held at the flagpole at the Aurora Fire Department Station #1, the ceremony is open to the public at takes place at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the Aurora Fire Department, 75. N. Broadway.

At 7:10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, the East Aurora High School NJROTC will hold a 9/11 observance ceremony outside the school at 500 Tomcat Lane. All are welcome. The ceremony will begin with a presentation of the colors and singing of the national anthem. The ceremony will include an invocation by an East Aurora cadet; a moment of silence to honor veterans, first responders, police and firefighters; remarks from Principal Anthony Crespo; and the playing of taps. The ceremony is expected to conclude at 7:35 a.m.

The 9/11 date also is celebrated via a national day of service.

Moment of Silence, Display Flags at Half Staff

Remember to display your United States flag at half-staff on Friday Sept. 11, 2015, in Honor of Patriot Day.

Friday, Sept.11, 2015, marks the 14-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed in suburban Pennsylvania. Patriot Day serves as a remembrance of the lives lost on that September morning.

On Patriot Day, the president directs that the American flag be flown at half-staff at individual American homes, at the White House, and on all U.S. government buildings and establishments, home and abroad. The president also asks Americans to observe a moment of silence beginning at 7:46 a.m. CST, the time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center that morning.
