An Aurora man will go to prison for robbing a man at gunpoint.

Tranon D. Meeks, 27, of the 400 block of Blackhawk Street, Aurora, was convicted late Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015, by a Kane County jury, of armed robbery, a Class X felony, and possession of cannabis, a Class A misdemeanor.

The jury deliberated for about two hours before it reached the verdict.

Prosecutors presented evidence that at about 5 p.m. Jan. 9, 2014, the victim went to Meeks’ home to sell Meeks marijuana. When the victim arrived, Meeks pointed a .22-caliber Marlin semiautomatic rifle at the victim and said, “You know what this is.” Meeks took the victim’s watch, wallet containing an unknown amount of cash, Samsung Galaxy Note II cellular telephone, backpack containing miscellaneous items and the marijuana.

Circuit Judge John A. Barsanti set Meeks’ next court appearance for 1 p.m. Dec. 2, 2015, in Courtroom 319 of the Kane County Judicial Center for motions and to set a sentencing date.

Meeks faces a sentence of between 21 and 45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. The sentencing range is enhanced because Meeks was in possession of a firearm during the commission of the crime.

Meeks remains in custody at the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest in lieu of $200,000 bail. Bond was revoked upon conviction.

The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Sal LoPiccolo and Alex Bederka.
