'DamNation' Screening in Batavia Highlights Waterway Health

‘DamNation’ Screening in Batavia Highlights Waterway Health

Since the Brewster Creek dam near Elgin was removed more than 10 years ago, the quality of the Fox River has improved and migrating fish now can move freely up and downstream.

The documentary DamNation, which focuses on the role dams play in local and national waterways, will be presented during a free special screening from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21 at the Batavia City Hall Council Chambers to provide information on the history of dams and their future.

The film shows how the removal of some dams can greatly improve the health and quality of rivers and surrounding the community.

DamnationThe removal of several dams along the Fox River has resulted in noticeable improvements by allowing the river to flow freely, reducing the amount of algae and increasing healthy oxygen levels.

The screening is free and no reservations are required. Batavia City Hall is at 100 N. Island Ave., Batavia.

The film’s trailer can be viewed at the website here.

This special screening is made possible through a partnership between The Conservation Foundation, Fox River Ecosystem Partnership, Friends of the Fox River, and Sierra Club IL Chapter Water Sentinels.
