Elgin Fire Department’s Oct. 10 Open House Includes Helicopter Landing

Flight for life helicopter 3

The Elgin Fire Department invites the public to attend its annual Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Fire Station 2 (650 Big Timber Road, Elgin). Parking will be available across the street from the station in the Verizon parking lot at 777 Big Timber Road.

Event highlights include a 1:30 p.m. Flight for Life helicopter landing and various demonstrations. Visitors will be able view how quickly a fire can grow and how sprinklers work to extinguish the blaze through a specialized see-through trailer. Other demonstrations include a simulated structure fire at the department’s training tower and several Technical Rescue Team exercises.

The day’s fun events will also include tours of the fire station, special exhibits, face painting, kids’ games and more. Plus, fire engine pedal cars and bunk gear for kids will be available for that perfect photo opportunity.

This annual event is held in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, which will be recognized Oct. 4-10. The National Fire Protection Association’s annual campaign theme for the year is “Hear the beep where you sleep” to remind the public that every bedroom should be equipped with a working smoke alarm.
