The Mighty Oaks of Kane County might be an OK name for a rock band (or maybe a country band), but it’s an even better title for a Kane County Forest Preserve District nature program.

The oak tree was once hailed as king of the forest. People called it magnificent, majestic and mighty. But that was then. Now, oak woodlands are in serious decline.

Join district naturalists from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at Dick Young Forest Preserve, located at 39W115 Main St., Batavia, for a guided hike, where you’ll get “up close and personal” with some of our venerable oaks and learn how to identify different species. You’ll also learn what the Forest Preserve District is doing to restore oak woodlands — and how you can help.
