Police: Social-Media Dispute Leads to Shooting Charges

A personal dispute between two Aurora men that spilled over onto social media was apparently behind a shooting that has landed one of the men behind bars.

Aurora Police Department LogoMartin Leyva-Ramirez, 24, of the 900 block of South Fourth Street, Aurora, was charged Oct. 1 with aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of an explosive bullet in connection with a Sept. 30 shooting on Aurora’s Near East side, according to an Aurora Police Department press release.

At about 8:10 p.m., Sept. 30, Leyva-Ramirez and the other man, a 21 year old Aurora resident, were arguing over Facebook when the 21 year old challenged him to come to a home in the first block of Webster Street so they could fight. Minutes later, Leyva-Ramirez showed up in his vehicle, and fired shots at the 21 year old who was standing in a front yard and a 16 year old male relative who was close by. He then sped from the scene. Neither of the intended targets were struck by the gunfire.

When police learned of Leyva-Ramirez’s alleged involvement, they set up a surveillance on his home and took him into custody without incident about an hour after the shooting. Charging documents indicate that a live bullet was found in his vehicle by officers searching it.
