The Kane County Health Department is advising residents that Aspen Foods of Chicago is recalling an additional 561,000 pounds of frozen, raw, stuffed and breaded chicken products that appear to be ready-to-eat and may be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis.

This is an expansion of the July 15 recall to include additional products. After further analysis, Aspen Foods chose to recall products in an effort to prevent additional illness. These products were shipped to retail stores and food service locations nationwide. Five Minnesota residents have been reported to have become ill from the products, but no one in Illinois.

The frozen, raw, stuffed, and breaded chicken items that appear to be ready-to-eat (RTE) were produced between Aug. 25 and Sept. 17 with “best if used by” dates of Aug. 23, 2016, to Dec. 15, 2016.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the organism. The illness usually lasts four to seven days.

Most people recover without treatment. In some persons, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact their health care provider.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
