UPDATE 10:40 AM THURSDAY, OCT. 22, 2015

A 29-year-old Hinckley man who was captured during a wild chase Tuesday in Sugar Grove and subsequently jumped ship from a local hospital is back in custody Thursday.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office located Matthew Hageman of 300 block of Lincoln Highway, Hinckley, at a local hospital, and he was being held in a secure medical ward as of 11 a.m. Thursday, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Pat Gengler said.

Updates are available on the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

Hageman’s past 48 hours is a saga of chase, disappearance and apprehension that sounds like something born of the television or movie script.

According to a Sheriff’s Office press release, deputies stopped a Chevrolet Blazer driven by Hageman at around 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at a gas station at the intersection of IL Route 47 and Cross Street in the village of Sugar Grove. As deputies were talking to Hageman, he drove away, heading south on Route 47.

Deputies ended pursuit when Hageman drove the Blazer through a field on the south side of Sugar Grove but spotted the vehicle re-entering the roadway near a construction zone near Route 30 and Dugan Road, reports said. The Blazer struck several construction cones as it continued west on Route 30 near the intersection of Dauberman Road, where Hageman pulled over and fled on foot.

Deputies set up a perimeter near the intersection, then located Hageman in a cornfield near the intersection. Because he sustained minor injuries, Hageman was transported to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora and was admitted overnight for treatment, reports said.

A search of the Blazer resulted in the seizure of a small amount of heroin. It was also learned that Hageman has a suspended driver’s license and had the following outstanding warrants:

  • Violation of an order of protection
  • Leaving the scene of a property damage accident
  • 2 warrants for driving with a suspended driver’s license

On Wednesday, before Hageman was discharged from the hospital, he left before deputies responded to take him into custody.  Hageman was at large through Wednesday night, and the Sheriff’s Office used social media, its tip411 program and plain old boot leather to get the word out that he was being sought and ultimately to locate him.

The Kane County States Attorney’s Office authorized the following charges against Hageman and additional warrants were issued for his arrest:

  • Unlawful possession of a controlled substance — felony
  • Fleeing and eluding a peace officer — felony
  • Resisting a peace officer — misdemeanor
  • Driving on a suspended driver’s license — misdemeanor
  • Leaving the scene of a property damage accident — misdemeanor
  • Improper lane usage — traffic offense
  • Driving on a sidewalk — traffic offense
  • Speeding — traffic offense
  • Improper passing on the shoulder — traffic offense
  • Disobeying a stop sign — traffic offense
  • Improper turn — traffic offense

The charges against Hageman are not proof of guilt.  A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the State’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
