Who’s Playing When? 9 Kane County Teams Make IHSA Football Playoffs
Yes, it’s Halloween weekend coming up, but it’s also high school football weekend for nine Kane County teams.
Want to know who’s playing who, when and where? Check out the match-ups below for more information, and let us know if we missed any Kane County schools in any of the eight IHSA brackets.
Thirty-two teams in each of eight classes make the playoffs, but those are whittled in half each week until a champion is decided over two days — Friday, Nov. 27, for Class 1A, 2A and 3A, and Saturday, Nov. 28, for Class 4A, 5A and 6A — at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.
We’ve got a lot of underdogs going into the first round of post-season play this weekend, and we’ve got more than a few favorites. Here’s a quick rundown of who’s “in.”
First, congrats to West Aurora! The Blackhawks made the playoffs this year with a 5-4 record. They’ve got their work cut out for them at noon on Saturday when they go up against the top seed in Class 8A: undefeated Loyola Academy.
Way to go South Elgin! There’s a Storm comin’ for Evanston. The 8-1 Storm have had a great season and look to continue it in a “neutral” location Friday night in Streamwood.
Yay, Batavia! The Bulldogs are a past state champion in Class 6A. Now it’s time for them to take a stab at running the table in Class 7A. Batavia is ranked fourth in its bracket with an 8-1 overall record, and hosts Pekin (5-4) Friday night.
Hurray for St. Charles North! The North Stars are 7-2, with losses only to fellow Upstate Eight neighbors Geneva and Batavia. North is ranked 21st in Class 7A and looks to upset Benet Academy (7-2) Saturday in Lisle.
Go, Geneva — block! That’s what my Uncle Bill used to say. The Vikings lost to Batavia this year in the rivalry game and finished the regular season 8-1. Geneva faces a tough first-round match Friday when the seventh-ranked Vikings host Oswego East (6-3) at Burgess Field.
Huzzah for Hampshire! The Whip-Purs are 6-3 with a 12th seed in Class 4A. They travel to DeKalb (7-2) to face the fifth seed Friday night.
Kick butt, Kaneland! Sorry, got carried away with the alliteration there. The Knights (6-3) are ranked eighth in Class 6A. They host 6-3 Belvidere (North) Friday in Maple Park in what should be a very good game.
Victory to Elgin St. Edward! In spite of or perhaps inspired by that home field weed-killer incident, the Green Wave have ground out a 6-3 record and 11th seed in Class 4A. They hope to mow down (sorry, again) No. 6 seed Richmond at 7 p.m. Friday at Richmond.
And finally, woo hoo for Westminster Christian (Elgin)! The Warriors finished 6-3 this year and have a 13th seed in Class 1A. Maybe that 13th seed will be a lucky number as they go up against fourth seed Polo (9-0) Friday at Polo, wherever that may be.
