South Elgin Is ‘Awesome’ From This Drone’s-Eye View

Seeing is believing, and there’s no better evidence of a community’s vibrancy than touring it.

But what if you could see it all, not from a car over a couple hours but from an aerial view that ranges from majestic to almost close enough to touch? What if you could capture a city’s economic and aesthetic assets in a video that’s under three minutes long?

Then you would have — in technical terms — an economic development showstopper many folks just might call “awesome.”

That’s pretty much the premise  and result of the South Elgin Drone Video created by the South Elgin Economic Development Council and unveiled at its 10th annual breakfast on Oct. 24. The video has been met with rave reviews and has received more than 12,000 views since it was posted on the SEED Facebook page.

“Sometimes a new appreciation for familiar surroundings can be had by just a simple change in perspective. Literally. For the village of South Elgin, that new perspective came with the help of a small, high-tech, hovering device — a drone,” SEED said in a press release.

The SEED Facebook comments have been pretty much a “wow,” and they reflect the notion that the video is not only a great sales but a great source of community pride.

  • “Very smooth. Nice Job! Lots to show off.”
  • “Love the video! Love living in South Elgin!”
  • “Awesome video! We love living in South Elgin!”
  • “The waterfall, lol!”
  • “Nicely done … Hats off to South Elgin Economic Development Council. South Elgin is a beautiful community I call home.”
  • “☆☆ Awesome”

The drone video highlights South Elgin homes, businesses, amenities and new developments. There’s no narrative, no hard sell, just a drone’s-eye view of the community that speaks for itself.

“South Elgin is a beautiful community with much to offer those who visit or stay,” said Eric Pepa, SEED’s vice chairman and secretary. “Our residents are friendly, and we welcome new businesses with open arms. What better way to show off our jewel of a town than from the air?”

Of course, the members of SEED do much more than create viral drone videos. Their recent breakfast featured a roster of speakers focused on community development and Illinois budget concerns, including state Sen. Karen McConnaughay and Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger.

“Knowing the state of our state helps us immensely as we look to promote growth throughout South Elgin,” Pepa said. “We are better able to serve our residents and new businesses with the insight that Sen. McConnaughay and Comptroller Munger were able to share.”
