Each year on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we pause to commemorate our veterans and the sacrifices they have made in providing our freedom.

Today, I want to take a brief moment just to share the magnitude of that sacrifice that has been made by Kane County’s bravest men and women.

Kane County is the home to 24,787 veterans, which makes us the seventh-largest county by veteran population in the state of Illinois.

Almost 9 percent of Kane County’s veterans have a service-related disability. Of those who do have a service-related disability, almost 32 percent are rated as being 70 percent to 100 percent disabled. In 2014, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs spent almost $37 million to care for Kane County veterans who utilize the Veterans Administration for their health care.

The health effects that the military has had on our veterans is profound and ranges from shell fragment wounds to environmental hazards from contaminated water at Camp Lejeune and Agent Orange in Vietnam — yet they are probably the most stoic individuals that you will ever meet.

Please take a moment out of your busy schedules on Wednesday and attend one of the many events that are being held across Kane County in honor of our veterans.  If you are a veteran, take a look at this link provided by the American Legion that lists the special discounts from restaurants and retailers that you can enjoy on this Veterans Day: http://www.legion.org/dispatch/230346/veterans-day-discounts
